For too long wastewater was just dumped back into the environment.
Now we are paying the price. In most modern cities waste water is a real Witches Brew.
Human waste is typically only 34 percent of the mixture. Industrial processes, storm water
inflow and groundwater infiltration make up the balance. On the residential side the
recipe includes things like decaying organic matter, excessive nutrients like ammonia,
phosphorous and nitrogen along with bacteria, viruses and disease-causing pathogens not
to mention other substances such as pharmaceutical and personal care products. On the
commercial side, agriculture and industry produce a toxic mass of pesticides and inorganic
chloramines along with those heavy metals like mercury, lead, cadmium, chromium and arsenic.
